The fires which have engulfed Fort McMurray, Alberta, are generated some utterly terrifying videos. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
This guy had front and rear dashcams mounted as he and his 88,000 fellow citizens got the hell out of Dodge. Watch this motorcyclist finally decide he’s gotta go. Bet this is the one time he would have preferred a full-face helmet.
In this one, you can see a poor deer trying to find shelter. Can’t imagine the toll this has taken on wildlife.

One cautionary note that I am going to carry with me for a long time: the highway out of Fort McMurray is LITTERED with cars and trucks that ran out of gas as people tried to flee. I will be keeping my car close to full permanently.

After nearly getting stranded when hurricane Ivan hit a number of years ago I've taken to keeping five 5-gallon cans full, cycling the oldest through lawn equipment, so I always have enough to top off both cars and carry some reserve if I need to flee the area for any reason.

I’m not usually a fan of bikers whipping around traffic like that (at least where lanesplitting is illegal), but in this case I don’t blame him a bit. I probably would’ve done the same, on the sidewalk if I had to.

The videos that have been posted of people evacuating are utterly terrifying. If I were on a motorcycle, I can’t imagine behaving much differently from that guy.

That was the first lesson I learned after moving to Louisiana. We came here just a few months before Hurricane Gustav paid a visit. We had no supplies to work with. We made our way north and stayed with some friends in Arkansas. I immediately went to the store and bought five five-gallon gas cans, several five-gallon bottles of water, and a generator; basically everything the store had. After Gustav came to Arkansas, we headed home where there were no supplies to be found. If I could have found more cans and another generator or two, I could have helped out a few of my neighbors.

Good god, I’d have done the exact same thing!
